Caring of the Saint Bernard can be done by following these steps.
Caring for the Saint Bernard
- Firstly, you should know this the size of Saint Bernard puppies are very small in comparison to the mother. The mother can accidently lie on the puppy so you should try to keep the mother away from puppies a bit so that she does not lie on them without knowing.
- Now, on the open section of the floor you should make a soft bed for the puppies. The bed should not be put inside a box because it increases the risk of the puppies being trapped behind the mother and to the box’s side.
- You should schedule an appointment with the vet when the puppies are three days old to remove declaw from them. Dewclaws are the extra claws which are inside the back and fore paws. You should know this that not all of them have declaws and it is not important to remove them.
- You should let the mother do most of the work of the puppies but you should caress and pet each of the puppies frequently to make them used of human touch. The tiny puppies have shrill voices and they cry pitifully when they are separated from their mother. You are in charge of carrying the wandering puppies back to its mother till their eyes are open.
- You should now prepare a play yard for the puppies. The eyes of the puppies will open between 10-14 days. Around third week the puppies will start walking clumsily with their tiny legs. From this point, the puppies will now need plenty of room to roam safely.
- You should soak the food of the puppy in warm water to soften it and you should offer it for about four weeks. Weaning should be done for next couple of weeks as it is a gradual process which takes over next couple of weeks to do so, as the mother dog nurses her puppies less and they start having solid food.
- The puppies should be given food four times in a day until they are about eight weeks old and you should then feed them three times in a day. Until six weeks of their age you should offer them softened food and then you can give them dry dog food.
- You should take your puppies to the vet after six weeks of their age for their first round of deworming, immunizations and well-puppy checks.
- The puppies should be taken to the vet at eight weeks of their age.
